Marine Knowledge Gate

MARINE TT

Abstract:

An online infrastructure developed and launched by Marine TT to collate, manage and deliver information from EU-funded marine research projects and the Knowledge Outputs (KOs) generated by these projects.

Implementation Context

Marine Knowledge Gate has been developed by Eurocean. Through EurOcean involvement in the MarineTT project, the platform included a component for information on the knowledge generated by research projects or “Knowledge outputs”. Through the FP7 Coordination and Support Action “STAGES” (Science and Technology Advancing Governance on Good Environmental Status), the Knowledge Gate has been expanded to include projects from new EU Funding Programmes as well as project with national and regional funding. Additionally, it offers information on the relevance, if any, to Marine Strategy Framework Directive (Marine Directive or MSFD) research and implementation.

Aspects / Objectives

The Marine Knowledge Gate is an innovative online repository of marine research projects and results (Knowledge Outputs) with funding from the EU and major national Research Funding and Performing Organisations (RFPOs) from 25 European coastal countries, as well as from Regional and International Agencies.

Conceptually, the system is innovative containing not only profiles of each research project, but also information about the knowledge produced by the research activity in a non-technical language.

Method

The EurOcean Knwledge Gate is updated with new projects extracted from different Funding Programmes by the EurOcean Team.

  • For the EU level, the latest update corresponds to the projects available in corresponding official sources
  • For the national level, information was either provided by Research Funding and Performing Organisations (RFPOs) and/or extracted from official project repositories of RFPOs and Research Institutes from 25 European coastal countries

The maintenance of the information is also carried out by the EurOcean Team on a regular basis and at least once a year a dedicated update request is sent to the Project Coordinators.

The system provides functionality for Project Coordinators to add and/or update the information on Projects and/or Knowledge Outputs. New/Updated records are made visible/accessible online after validation by the EurOcean Team.

Projects were chosen on an individual basis depending on standard criteria:

  • It deals with marine and/or maritime research, either entirely or in certain component(s) of the project”;
  • The component(s) of marine/maritime research entail(s) a significant part/funding of the project”
  • Projects strictly focused on freshwater are not included

Transferability

This type of repository is highly transferable and could be used for projects dealing with other topics.
