The IH-MSP Platform is the GIS platform which facilitates the implementation of maritime spatial planning in Spain. It focuses on the spatial potentials of offshore aquaculture and wind energy. Developed by the University of Cantabria (Spain), in the context of the RENAQUA Programme, the platform integrates data from various sources at global, national and local scales. The potentials are considered with regards to the current environmental conditions, as well as future conditions in relation to climate change.
QUESTIONS THIS PRACTICE MAY HELP ANSWER:
- What are the most suitable locations for developing aquaculture in Spain?
- What are the most suitable locations for developing marine renewable energy infrastructure in Spain?
- How will climate change affect the potential for offshore aquaculture and wind energy development?
IMPLEMENTATION CONTEXT:
The IH Platform has been developed by the Institute of Environmental Hydraulics (University of Cantabria), in the context of the RENEQUA Programme, generated using the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service.
ASPECTS / OBJECTIVES:
The tool is designed with the purpose of integrating scientific and technical knowledge of researchers in the region of Cantabria. The information system is expected to support the 2030 agenda for sustainability. It enables the areas, where aquaculture or offshore energy would be the most sustainable, to be identified.
METHOD:
The platform integrates the results of the RENAQUA Project, studies undertaken by the ATLAS and ATLAS PRO (with the focus on the Spanish Coast), and data from the EMODNet platform. The aim of the RENEQUA project is to assess the potential for co-location of aquaculture and marine energy activities, and to identify associated potential conflicts in coastal areas.
MAIN OUTPUTS / RESULTS:
The tool illustrates current aquaculture and marine energy activities, as well as potential locations for future development. The platform provides oceanic and meteorological data over the last 25 years, including climate change projections.
TRANSFERABILITY:
While the tool is focused on the Spanish coastal waters, it can also support the MSP initiatives in other regions.
