Questions this practice may help answer:

  • What marine data is available for the Estonian sea area?

Implementation Context:

This application was developed within the Pan Baltic Scope project to help and explain the Maritime Spatial Planning process.

Aspects / Objectives:

Outcomes of the model make it possible to work towards sustainable solutions to maximize the economic benefit gained from the use of marine resources with minimum damage to the environment. The aim of the economy model is to increase the capacity for knowledge-based management of marine resources and accounting for their potential economic benefits. The aim of the cumulative impact model is to identify various human pressures and account for their cumulative effects on the natural environment, while considering regional differences of nature.

Method:

PlanWise4Blue is an application that combines models of marine economy and cumulative impact assessment. Such a model allows one to assess the economic benefits of various management scenarios along with their environmental impact across the Estonian sea space.

Main Outputs / Results:

The main outcome is the creation of the PlanWise4Blue application, models of marine economy and cumulative impact assessment. This application represents is open source and publicly available. It assesses economic benefits of sectors such as fisheries, aquaculture, reed harvesting, wind energy, maritime transport and recreation, as well as the cumulative impacts of human activities on natural resources. The application allows display of values of ecosystem service (i.e. provisioning, regulating and maintenance services) indicators across the Estonian sea space, as well as assessment of the effect of various scenarios on the model output.

Transferability:

While the PlanWise4Blue only concerns the Estonian sea space, the model is potentially applicable to other regions, where data is available.
