The MedAves Pesca project aims to develop ways to reduce the number of sea birds that die accidentally caught in fishing.
The main objectives of this project are:
- Understand, among the marine areas of the Natura 2000 Network at sea (Aveiro-Nazaré, Berlengas, Cabo Raso, Cabo Espichel and Costa Sudoeste), which are the most problematic areas for the accidental capture of sea birds in mainland Portugal;
- Develop and test 2 mitigation measures that reduce accidental capture of sea birds in fishing;
- Assess whether the tested measures work for birds and fishermen;
- Sensitise fishermen to the problem of accidental catches of seabirds and to the need to protect marine ecosystems.
