The document describes the stakeholder engagement strategy for maritime spatial planning in the Macaronesia. It is produced under the MarSP project, with the aim of assisting the competent authorities of Portugal and Spain in the implementation of maritime spatial planning in three Archipelagos - Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands.
QUESTIONS THIS PRACTICE MAY HELP ANSWER:
- How is stakeholder engagement relevant to the MSP?
- How can stakeholders be identified in the MSP process?
- How are stakeholders classified in the MSP process?
- How can stakeholder engagement be improved?
The document is produced in the context of the MarSP project (completed in December 2019), with the aim of improving the Maritime Spatial Planning process in the Macaronesian Archipelagos (Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands).
ASPECTS / OBJECTIVES:
The objective of the engagement strategy is to identify and list the stakeholders to be involved in the MSP process in the Macaronesian Archipelago, as well as to define a methodology for the stakeholder’s consultation.
The strategy is based on the identification of stakeholders to be involved in the MSP process, as well as stakeholder’s classification according to the degree of their participation in the process.
The document provides details on the organisation of several workshops with local and regional stakeholders, as well as on targeted interviews.
MAIN OUTPUTS / RESULTS:
The strategy enables a sector-wide understanding of the MSP process, as well as defining a common vision and objectives between the stakeholders in the Macaronesian context in order to improve the MSP process.
While the strategy focuses on the stakeholder engagement in the Macaronesian archipelagos, the methodology applied to identify, classify and organise stakeholder involvement can be used in the MSP processes in other regions.
