Species Dashboard.

Abstract:

The web application provides free access to the fisheries data with the focus on biological parameters. It allows the length, weight, and age of commercial species caught around Ireland to be explored, as well as effects of age, sex, area, and fishing gear used on the species under consideration.

QUESTIONS THIS PRACTICE MAY HELP ANSWER:

  • What data is currently available on the fisheries biology?

IMPLEMENTATION CONTEXT:

The application is developed by the Marine Institute (Ireland) within the context of the project "Informatics in Support of Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management - Phase 1".

ASPECTS / OBJECTIVES:

The Species Dashboard allows public access to the data on fisheries biology with the focus on the Irish waters.

MAIN OUTPUTS / RESULTS:

The application provides information on the following parameters:

  • Fishing grounds
  • Irish ports
  • Types of fishing gear
  • Nationality of a vessel
  • Fish ageing

The maps illustrate the data, while a separate tab provides information on the fish species (i.e. biological data, age, distribution).

TRANSFERABILITY:

Although the web application is developed for the Irish sea, the model can be applied to other marine regions.
