The report discusses the opportunities for engagement across and between regions to facilitate better understanding of marine planning and what it can achieve.
QUESTIONS THIS PRACTICE MAY HELP ANSWER:
- What is the role of the regions in the MSP process?
- How can regions be involved in the MSP process?
IMPLEMENTATION CONTEXT:
The study is produced within the context of the NorthSEE project, which aims to achieve greater coherence in the spatial planning processes. The report on the Role of Regions in MSP in the North Sea Area complements the other reports on Shipping, Energy Infrastructure and Environmental issues, which are also produced within the context of the project.
ASPECTS / OBJECTIVES:
The aim of this report is to demonstrate how regions can be involved in the maritime spatial planning.
METHOD:
The first part of the report represents an overview of the legislative context for MSP in the North Sea, with a summary of national approaches for its implementation. The final part presents the conclusions and recommendations for marine planning authorities, regional entities and other relevant stakeholders.
MAIN OUTPUTS / RESULTS:
MSP systems are generally designed to deliver national objectives, and they vary considerably in their scope and approach. Representation of regional interests is essential for securing a comprehensive understanding of what Maritime Spatial Planning can deliver.
TRANSFERABILITY:
The study is conducted with a focus on the North Sea, but applied methodology can be useful for other marine regions.
Responsible Entity:
NorthSEE project
Funding Source:
The NorthSEE project is co-funded by INTERREG V B: North Sea Region Programme 2014 – 2020.
