Deliverable 5.2 Development and implementation of a decision support tool for wave energy development in the context of maritime spatial planning

Abstract:

This study is a deliverable of the WESE project that aims to improve the current knowledge on environmental effects of wave energy to better inform decision-makers and managers on environmental risks and reduce environmental uncertainty. This deliverable was produced under the work package 5 "MSP-based sustainability analysis of wave energy development".

Questions this practice may help answer:

  • How are the most suitable areas identified for the development of MRE in Portuguese and Spanish Atlantic areas?

Implementation Context:

This report was developed within the framework of the WESE project.

Aspects / Objectives:

The main objective of this deliverable is to develop a decision support tool and conceptual model to facilitate the identification of the most suitable areas for the development and use of MRE in the Portuguese and Spanish Atlantic areas.

Method:

Specific objectives were:

  1. Definition of a conceptual model.
  2. Adoption and adaptation of existing frameworks.
  3. Implementation of the framework into a model.
  4. Model feeding.
  5. Adaption of the model into a web tool.

Main Outputs / Results:

A Decision Support Tool (DST) for the identification of the most feasible areas for wave energy projects in the context of maritime spatial planning (MSP), has been developed and implemented. The DST is based on a conceptual model which considers the main environmental, technical, and socio-economic factors that could influence how suitable it is for the establishment of wave energy projects.

Transferability:

This practice focuses on Portuguese and Spanish Atlantic areas studied in the framework of the WESE project. The results of the study are therefore not transferable.
