SymNet Project looks closer into the current status of the manufacturing, logistics, tourism and energy industries and the existing commercial networks in the Black Sea Basin as well as the dynamics of these four sectors in the participating countries.
Implementation context
The Black Sea Industrial Symbiosis Platform was developed in the frame of SymNet project - Industrial Symbiosis Network for Environment Protection and Sustainable Development in Black Sea Basin. The overall goal of the project is to contribute to minimize the environmental degradation while maximizing economic and social development in Black Sea Basin by establishing industrial symbiosis system as a new and innovative approach. Therefore, the overall objective aims to create a new system from which both producers and consumers will benefit while decreasing the environmental footprint on Black Sea Basin.
Aspects/Objectives
Black Sea Industrial Symbiosis Platform aims to provide communication as well as cooperation platform for the companies of the Black Sea Region. It is supported by the database developed to create a platform for opportunities for the region’s companies to network and cooperate; online tools are developed like carbon foot-printing and trade networks optimisation to support the abovementioned cooperation and an industrial symbiosis strategy is developed that contributes to the development of strong local economies and strengthen social and cultural interaction between decision-makers, producers, traders and consumer communities in Bulgaria, Turkey, Romania, and Moldova. Each member company of BSISP is free to use these tools for its own benefit. BSISP is a not for profit organisation and participation to BSISP and using the tools of the platform is free for the period of 2011-2013.
Method
SymNet Project looks closer into the current status of the manufacturing, logistics, tourism and energy industries and the existing commercial networks in the Black Sea Basin as well as the dynamics of these four sectors in the participating countries. Data collected were transferred into a database with the ultimate goal of enforcing the social and commercial interaction between the communities of decision makers, producers and sellers in Romania, Turkey, Bulgaria and Moldova, and creating an industrial symbiosis strategy that would contribute to the effective management of resources for developing strong, environmentally friendly, socially responsible and also economically feasible local economies by 2012. Through this database, the project also aims to pave the way for new collaborations by increasing awareness about these four industries in the Black Sea countries and by strengthening the networks and cooperation between research organisations, policy makers and industry. It is aimed to optimize the collected data by incorporating environmental impacts and sustainability to see how trade in the Black Sea region can be increased by minimizing environmental impacts.

Any data that has been marked as confidential is not shared with the other members of BSISP and the data collected is only used in a consolidated manner in developing the regional industrial symbiosis strategy. Data that is marked as free to share is openly shared to the other contributing companies of BSISP.
The general information of the participating company (Name, Address, General Activity) is free for open public in order to stimulate further connection between existing and prospective members. The member companies upon accessing the database and BSISP tools are expected to show goodwill to promote BSISP and find ways to cooperate with other member companies as to set good examples in order to find new mechanisms to further develop BSISP.
The database is linked to GIS for better visualization and easy use of the data. There are also links to carbon calculator and trade optimisation calculator tools from the database that allows direct access for companies.
The database allows BSISP management to send newsletters and/or announcements including available opportunities to its members through a mailing list and it also enables the members to communicate among themselves. It has a link in the project website for easy access.
Transferability
The database can be extended by adding other economic sectors or extending at the Black Sea basin level.
