This case study presents an analysis of the Dubrovnik – Neretva County within the spatial planning framework of Croatia. The analysis includes an overview of the spatial-statistical trends of the sectors covered by EU MSP Directive and an overview of existing spatial planning initiatives and documents for the study area.

Implementation Context:
The case study is carried out within the SUPREME project component of the development of partner pilot study areas. The development of the case study provides a review of the approach to MSP and cross-border cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean while exploring issues highlighted previously by member states.
It overviews and analyses the geological and geographical features, natural and environmental aspects, socio-economic characteristics, coastal and land uses, technical infrastructure, nonliving resources, natural and cultural heritage in the coastal and marine area. It also reviews European and national planning policies and guidelines for the area to formulate planning guidelines for the pilot study area.
Aspects / Objectives:
The aim of this case study was to analyse the spatial planning framework for the Dubrovnik – Neretva County at a national level.
Method:
The case study was developed through the analysis of regional and national planning level legistlation and objectives.
Main Outputs / Results:
A comprehensive analysis of the spatial planning framework and socio-economic characteristics of the maritime sectors present in Dubrovnik – Neretva County. This analysis included the following components:
1) Vision and scenario building:
Vision: "The Dubrovnik-Neretva County is an economically prosperous, ecologically preserved region of the high quality of life and recognizable cultural-natural identity." From the aforementioned vision, three goals have emerged that elaborate the aforementioned vision:1.Increase competitiveness and establish sustainable economic growth and development 2.Improve the sustainable management of spatial resources and infrastructure 3.Improve the quality of life and strengthen institutional capacity, human and social capital."
Scenarios:
2) Establishing objectives and indicators for MSP in the study area
3) Spatial plans for internal waters and territorial seas and the EEZ and continental shelf of the study area
4) Recommendations for the improvement of maritime spatial planning in Croatia
Transferability:
This case study can be used as a methodological and knowledge base for the development of maritime spatial plans in adjacent areas in the Eastern Mediterranean and Croatia.
