Enhanced Protection for Five Natura 2000 Sites in the Baltic Sea

Date

The EU has adopted new conservation measures to protect five Natura 2000 sites in the German EEZ of the Baltic Sea. Proposed by Germany and supported by all Baltic EU countries, these measures ban fishing with mobile bottom-contacting gears in specific areas, including Fehmarnbelt, Kadetrinne, Pommersche Bucht mit Oderbank, and the sites of Westliche Rönnebank and Adlergrund.

The goal is to protect sensitive seabed habitats, improve species and biotope status, and support the EU's biodiversity and Green Deal objectives. These measures contribute to the EU's Habitats Directive, Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), and help protect marine ecosystems from climate change.
