Policy of use and management

The seascape of the North Sea has always been dynamic; it is the sea that is used by shipping and fishing nations for centuries. It is a rather shallow sea, with sand banks and only a few areas with hard substrates.

The tool is developed within the framework of the IMPACT project which aims to support plans of transboundary actions for the protection of the MPAs, while at the same time allowing the development of ports.

JNCC (Joint Nature Conservation Committee)

The map represents an interactive resource containing information on 355 Marine Protected Areas (MPA) designated in the UK and Crown Dependency waters.


The DST-MPA is a tool designed to help users to find recommendations, provided within the framework of the PHAROS4MPAs project, concerning the environmental impacts of economic sectors in the Mediterranean.


The Spanish and Portugese authorities discussed the idea to develop and manage and cross-border Marine Protected Area (MPA) between both countries.

Plemmirio Marine Protected Area

Located in the eastern coast of Sicily, Italy, the Plemmirio Marine Protected Area (MPA) covers an area of 2400 ha.
