The MedFund, the environmental fund for Mediterranean MPAs, and MedPAN will collaborate with Conservation International to lead a new Global Environment Facility-funded project called: “Build Back a Blue and Stronger Mediterranean” providing comprehensive and integrated support to improve MPAs management.

Twenty nationally designated new MPAs will be supported, this covers almost 220,000 hectares across Albania, Algeria, Lebanon, Morocco, Montenegro, and Tunisia. Training will be provided to enhance the management capacities of existing protected areas across the region.

During its 60 months duration, this project aims to contribute to the restoration and protection of fisheries resources and support the resilience of marine ecosystems for the benefit of local populations with an increased revenue from sustainable fisheries and the development of ecotourism.

The project will start on the 28th of October 2022 in Montenegro with representatives from the countries involved and the Mediterranean partner organisations.
