The 21st MSEG meeting on MSP was held by the AMMSP in Brussels on 29-30 November 2021. Due to the current context the meeting was organised in hybrid format, with participants able to follow the discussions both in presence and remotely.

The meeting gave Member States the opportunity to present the progress made in implementing the MSP Directive, following the deadline of 31 March 2021, with presentations to this effect from Lithuania, Germany and Spain. The exchanges were fruitful and engaging for future collaborations between several participants. In addition, participants received a presentation on the results of the study on integrating an ecosystem-based approach (EBA) into maritime spatial planning, which ended in November 2021. Two new projects that started in September 2021 under the call EMFF-MSP-2020, Emerging ecosystem-based Maritime Spatial Planning topics in North and Baltic Seas Region (eMSP NBSR) and Advancing Maritime Spatial Planning in Outermost Regions (MSP-OR), were also presented.

Participants also got an update on the ongoing work of the Technical Expert Group on Data for MSP which held its most recent meeting on 23 November 2021. During the event the Commission also reminded participants of the current call for MSP projects (deadline 12 January 2021). The next MSEG meeting is foreseen during the first quarter of 2022 after the publication of the study on “the implementation by EU Member States of Directive 2014/89/EU on Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP Directive)” conducted by a consortium comprising Deloitte, Wageningen University & Research, and Ramboll Consulting on behalf of the Commission.
